Our approach focuses on a hitherto underestimated but vital element of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) activities. While ICZM activities often give much attention to organisational, technical and procedural aspects, an explicit recognition of the importance of the psychological, "human" aspects could prove to be paramount for the ultimate success of ICZM.
It appears essential through a training to prepare a community of stakeholders to successfully participate in the integrated management process. In this training, prime attention is given to elements such as: identifying the common goal, moving away from your own viewpoint, recognising viewpoints and perspectives of others, and recognising the complementary role and responsibility of all stakeholders.
