Since the venue of handheld digital photocameras, we investigated and demonstrated the great potential of images taken with these cameras from small aircraft. First in The Netherlands, then in Uruguay, Panamá, Turkey, Colombia and Mexico. The advantages of this method include the fact that there is great flexibility concerning the moment of taking the pictures, and the height of the flight (below high clouds). Also the method does not requiere the involvement of (often expensive, often foreign) providers. With the venue of drones equipped with high quality photo and video cameras, and easy to use software for the processing of the acquired images, this method has gained a solid position in complement of satellite observations.
